Class Reflection
Counseling 12
Vincent Vaca
My experiences in this class so far have been good. I’ve enjoyed the various articles and topics that we have covered in the class readings. Articles such as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs really helped to illustrate what many individuals seek to meet when they are looking to establish themselves in a job or career. As a teacher, this is something that I can talk with my students about and have a discussion about choosing jobs and careers. Many of my students in eighth grade are deciding which high schools, magnet programs, or academies to join in ninth grade. To help them decide, I can use parts of this article to help them make their decision.
I also particularly enjoyed the MBT and SI inventories. It’s always interesting for me to see how accurate they are when assessing which occupations and careers would be suit me. I thought the MBTI was not as accurate as the SII. The MBTI listed a career in education as one of the least likely jobs for me. Being that I am a teacher and I really enjoy my job, I obviously felt that was not quite accurate. On the other hand, I felt the SII was incredibly accurate. The top three jobs listed in the SII were middle school, high school, and elementary school teacher. Needless to say, I felt this was a perfect match.

One aspect of this class I need to work on is my time management. I am married with two children, so free time is in short supply for me. Most of the course work for this class is done at night, usually after my children have been put down for the night. I feel as though the best way to combat doing too much work at night is to work on it consistently to avoid doing all the work in one or two days. It’s been about two years since I finished my last Masters program, and getting back into the flow of things is coming along slowly. Overall, I feel I’m headed in the right direction and slowly but surely, will get where I want to be.
